Economic Empowerment & Livelihood Support
The Girls Support Center (GSC) focuses on equipping young girls, teenage mothers and vulnerable youth with skills and opportunities to achieve financial independence. Below are the ways the organization supports economic empowerment and sustainable livelihoods:
1. Vocational Skills Training
- Training in tailoring, knitting and textile production.
- Hairdressing and beauty therapy.
- Baking and catering services.
- Soap-making and craft-making.
- Agricultural training (poultry, vegetable growing and small-scale farming).
2. Income-Generating Activities (IGAs) & Entrepreneurship
- Formation of savings and investment groups for women and youth.
- Business startup support for trained beneficiaries.
- Providing small grants or microloans for income-generating activities.
- Training in financial literacy, business planning and management.
- Encouraging self-help groups to start cooperative businesses.
3. Employment Opportunities
- Establishing a shoe factory, textile factory and braiding factory in Soroti to create job opportunities.
- Linking trained individuals to potential employers.
- Promoting self-employment by supporting beneficiaries in setting up small businesses.
4. Cooperative Development & Market Linkages
- Facilitating cooperatives where women and youth can collectively market their products.
- Creating platforms to showcase handmade crafts, clothes and agricultural products.
- Networking with larger markets to promote locally made products.
5. Digital & Technological Empowerment
- Training in e-commerce and online business marketing.
- Providing access to digital skills such as basic ICT training.
- Encouraging digital platforms for market accessibility and networking.
6. Life Skills & Soft Skills Training
- Training in leadership and communication skills.
- Conflict resolution and teamwork development.
- Work ethic and professionalism for employment success.
7. Partnership with Government & NGOs
- Seeking funding and partnerships to support economic empowerment programmes.
- Advocating for government policies that favour women’s economic empowerment.
- Engaging financial institutions to support women-friendly financial services.
These interventions aim to break the cycle of poverty, reduce dependency and help young women build sustainable livelihoods for themselves and their families.
